WITH almost three quarters of the year gone, it seems like a pretty good time to look at the films released so far.

At this time, we can ably review them with far less expectations on how they will do both at the box office and with the critics because, the viewers (ourselves included) have already decided on their fate.

Here are our Top 5 Picks of 2016 so far;

  1. Captain America: Civil War

Whenever a film brings together a bunch of superheroes, there is a lot of hype and usually, they never leave up to it. That was not the case with the third Captain America film.

The film delivered on all fronts and despite having a host of superheroes to display and introduce, they balanced the story, characters and time.

It also managed to setup future storylines for both Black Panther and Spiderman whose films we will be seeing very soon.

For a film so good, it was hard to find a fault but, our team managed to find one – Bucky! The guy has and we presume, will continue to be part of any future Captain America films which is a bit annoying.

In the past, each installment of a superhero film introduced a new villain, something they have failed to do with this franchise!

  1. Zootopia

Disney continues to dominate the animation films arena and Zootopia is just a case-closer on that matter.

Over the last couple of years, animations have expanded their reach, budgets and general gross at the box office. They are no longer a niche for children but, a far wider market and all this has come down to the creativity companies like Disney invest to bring such films to the big screens.

The subjected matter has also evolved beyond mere fairytales and subtly introduced real life events into the fold.

Zootopia ticks all the boxes in creativity, subject matter and most importantly, (for Disney) – the box office. The film is one of the two films that have grossed over $1 billion at the international box office this year so far.

  1. Central Intelligence

Comedy films are going through what we could call a “bust era”. They are plenty out there but not as funny as they used to be.

The other issue with them are the redundant sequels to previously successful ones – think; Ride Along 2, Horrible Bosses 2, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 or even Grown Ups 2.

All of them fail to measure up to the predecessors in many ways than one.

Central Intelligence is therefore, a rare gem in a field of so many rough stones. It had the right combination of actors – Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart who did not disappoint.

  1. Eye in The Sky

Now here is a film that speaks volumes on the war on terror and the new frontier in that war – drones.

Based in Kenya, there is a lot of surreal moments to this fictional film that puts forward a lot of questions on the idea of greater good and the politics of war along with its bureaucracy.

Together with a talented cast, this is a ridiculously intense film and therefore, it makes the cut!

  1. Mr. Right

Honest and unbelievable is the key in this film which brings a refreshing way to tell a romantic comedy.

It is violent and funny, a combination that usually produces something unique when done well though not often. The story of a girl who falls for a contract killer with a twist is something worth watching.

Other worthy mentions;

Jungle Book

Finding Dory

Now You See You 2

Jason Bourne

The Purge: Election Year
